Get behind the wheel of a turbo rally car and unleash its power on the Perth Hills dirt tracks at WA’s Rally Racing School. A great gift experience!
Are you the type that seeks adrenaline-rushing activities? Want to explore the tranquil countryside of Perth? Have a manual license? Got the need, the need for speed? If you answered yes to all of these (or know someone that would), look into booking some hot laps at Perth’s fun Rally Racing School located up in Bakers Hill.
At Rally School, you can choose between a turbo Subaru WRX STI or Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution rally car and receive comprehensive training in their turbo rally vehicles for gravel and tarmac rallying, plus get one-on-one CO-Driver training. This whole experience makes for an awesome Fathers Day gift or birthday gift for that special male (or female – shouldn’t stereotype) in your life. Watch them zoom around the dirt tracks while you have a cup of tea and snack on complimentary lollies amidst tranquil bush scenery. Oath, mate – that is fair dinkum awesome yakka stuff, now we’re bloody talking aye! (Going into Full-Aussie mode now, don’t mind me)
Guys seem to love being reckless and going fast – so I thought it would make a brilliant birthday gift for my boyfriend. I got him an “8 Hot Lap Drive AND 1 Hot Lap” experience gift voucher on Adrenalin.com.au (there’s also RedBalloon.com.au as an alternative – both I’ve used and are same, same) – and it’s said the laps have been specially designed to give drivers an insight into this thrilling motorsport.

Our Western Australian Landscape is both vast and beautiful.
Perth Hills is 45 minutes east of Perth, and you’ll be driving through vibrant villages and character townships that exude a country charm on your way to Perth Rally School. It’s a scenic and beautiful drive, especially on a Sunday! If you have the time, it’s also a great opportunity to also explore other things to do in the area, like visiting the historically iconic Mundaring Weir Dam, Kalamunda Town Centre or going on one of the many bike and walk trails.

We had like four pies between us that day, FOUR PIES!
Seriously – this is a must. Make sure to stop into the locally famous Bakers Hill Pie Shop on your way to or from Perth Rally School! This is not far from the rally school compound. Bakers Hill Pie Shop offers some of the most delicious pies, pastry’s and cream cakes in WA, including their famous vanilla slice. It’s always a busy hub there. We had many pies that day! Check out their Facebook here.

The hug goodbye. Does he know I’m taking a selfie behind his back? Yes. I’m thinking: do we get icecream after this?
Perth Rally School have signs up around the area to keep you on the right track to the area. You’ll see a gate and a waiting pitstop. New cars arriving must stop at that pitstop and wait for a staff member to drive down and collect you all. This is to keep things organised on a back-to-back booking timeslots so no collisions happen and people don’t get carried away rally driving in their cars on private property.
In summary, what you get:
- Your chosen number of laps with YOU behind the wheel of a rally prepared Subaru WRX or Mitsubishi Evo (your choice)
- Professional in-car tuition
- Full safety gear and in-car communications
Be prepared for some great excitement and new driving techniques as you take on their custom built rally track for the number of laps you have chosen in your booking.
And be warned, a taster could have you hooked on rally and wanting to learn more about motorsport!
“If everything seems under control, you’re not going fast enough” – Mario Andretti

The Evo going at it, rawr!

Subaru’s doing their thang – nice work, boys.
To get more of an insight into how it went, lets ask the driver himself – my boyfriend. I sat down with him to ask him the hard-hitting questions (see I can be a serious interviewer):
Q. What was your highlight:
A: What’s not to like. It is good fun and also educational to drive on a low traction surface at speed. Benefits are it broadens your driving experience and (theoretically) makes you a better driver.
Q. What could have made it better?
A: More time behind the wheel. Really a full day would be required to improve your skills noticeably. As the SAS say: “practice makes progress, nothing’s perfect.”
Q. What was your favourite car to drive?
A: I drove the Subaru wrx last time, and had the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution this time… I preferred the Mitsubishi Evo. Less turbo lag and it felt lighter and more nimble.

Not going to lie, I’m a pretty cool girlfriend. Haha.
